ARCHITECTURAL
THANE
Welcome
back to Architectural Thane by Trupti Biswas. This section
will give us the information on Architect of Ancient Thane.
This
is Trupti here. So how was the introduction to Aaple Thane
city? Here we will see how the city of Thane has developed
over these years
its childhood , its youth
.
Its pink days and its blue days also.
The
old city center of Thane
Today
Ashok Talkies was then 'Shivaji Theatre', the only
theatre then.
Todays
Prabhat Talkies area (Garbage dumpyard then) was the civic
center of Thane, with a jail on the opposite side where people
were hanged in the open on a mango tree. Near the jail there
was a cattle shed, Police Station (now renewed into Marathi
Granth Sangrahalaya) and a horseshoe shaped municipality office.
The Collector's office was positioned where the present (old
and new) Tahsildar office stands.
The
road form the railway station to Collector's office was the
main city road. The road names then were very crude and local.
The
new city center of thane
The
new city center has developed in the heart of the city along
the Court Naka .The name of the chowk itself suggests that
the high court is placed over here, with the Zilladhikari
karyalaya complex on the opposite side. The court naka road
converges with four other roads to form a traffic node.
This node is characterized by a huge Banayan tree which is
maintained inspite of its placement in the middle of the road.
This tree adds a life to the chowk .The government rest house
faces the chowk, followed by a road going towards the police
quarters and an adjacent road going towards the Police Headquarters.
One
of the roads leads to the Thane jail and the other one terminates
in a small chowk with the civil hospital, G.P.O., Central
Maidan and a Talao enveloping it. The
beautification of chowks and road widening has given a facelift
to this chowk but there is nothing that is Architecturally
appealing. There is no elevational detailing in them, neither
are the structures worked out in proportion to each other.
Thus there is no street façade which can define this
space as a Administrative zone or a city center in general.
These
structures can be unified by maintaining height proportions
between them and giving them a elevationally unified look.
The potential of these structures together with the chowk
should be recognized and strategical planning should be done,
accordingly. This
was a critical analysis of the city centers of Thane. There
is more to come about the new structures and the facelifts
going on in Thane.
