Thane, the Northen Most District of Konkan, lifes adjoining the Arebian Sea in the North-West of the Maharashtra state. Its Northen limits adjoin the Union territories of Dadra, Nagar HAveli and the State of Gujarat while the districts of Nasik and Ahamadnagar are to it's east. Pune to the South-East, Kolaba to the South and Greater Bombay to the South-West.

The district covers an area of 9,553.0 sq. km., it covers 3% of the surface area of Maharashtra. Th district population is distributed among 24 hours and 1,588 inhabited villages.

The administrative of the district have undergone considerable changes due to frequent revision, for a variety of reason, such as split of the original North Konkan district, re-organisation of following the creation of the Maharashtra and the more recent expansion of the limits of Mumbai city.

As a result, bounderies of the district both in the North and the South reflect administrative convinience rather than distinct geographical features. However, to the east, scrap face of the Sahyadri constitues a well demarcated boundary.

Rivers The river of the district mainly belong to two river stream of the North Konkan, namely the Ulhas and Vaiterna, both draining the rainy western slopes of the Sahyadri that lie between the Bhor and the Thal Ghats.
Creeks All along the coast are found many small creeks, in which tidal water flood upstream and inundate much low ground, human interface in many cases has helped in converting them into mud flats.
Climate It is characterised by high humidity nearly all the year round, an appersive summer season, and well distributed and heavy rainfall during South-West mansoon season.
